Project of the month: Ring Up The Twist - Dress Up A Multi-strand Necklace

printable version

Materials:

  • Various  beads to make a multi-strand necklace in your desired length. We use 3 x 20” carnelian, citrine and jasper chips for our 17.5”, 3-strand necklace sample.
  • Accent beads to make the rings. We use 6mm round peals and 8mm round Swarovski® crystals for our sample - 50 pearls and 5 crystals
  • 2 x bead caps with wide opening (10mm)
  • 6 x size 8 seed beads
  • 2 x sterling silver crimp beads (2x2)
  • 3 x 2ft+ beading wire (C-Flex or Soft Flex), 0.014/15mm
  • 1 set of toggle or other clasp
  • 30”  PowerCord® elastic cord

Tools:

Chain nose pliers (for crimping; you can also use crimping pliers or a magic crimper), wire cutter, scissors, and Hypo-Cement.

Estimated cost: $75

Estimated time: 1.5 - 2 hours

Step 1.

String beads into beading wires to make 3 x 15”  bead strands, (The bead length is the total length of necklace minus 2.5”  - the length for clasp, seed beads and the bead caps.) Leave 4” + tails on each end.

Step 2.

On one end of the necklace, string a bead cap through all 3 beading wires at the end to bring the strands together.

Step 3.

String 3 seed beads, one crimp bead and one end of the clasp after the bead caps into all 3 beading wires

Step 4.

Loop back the wires through the crimp bead, pull tight and crimp it to secure. Repeat Step 2 - 4 for the other end of the necklace.

Step 5.

To make one ring: String 10 pearls and one crystal into 6” of PowerCord. Tie the ends together with double square knots. Pull tight, dap some cement. Let it dry and cut off the tails. Repeat to make the other 4 rings. You can make different ring size and ring quantities

Step 6.

Twist the necklace strands and slide the rings into positions that scatter evenly on the necklace.

Note: You will need to twist the necklace and reposition the rings when you wear the necklace.
